Mini Lesson (Draft)

Unit Title: Writing an Analysis of a Text
Lesson Title: Italicize, “quote”, or underline a title?
Context: I would teach this mini-lesson during the writing process. This would fit in nicely in the editing section. This lesson needs to be taught when the students are writing an analysis of a text. If a student references a text, article, or any other material, they must include the proper punctuation. Students will be using this all of their academic careers; it is important that they understand this concept. Students can use this lesson in their writing at that time and in future writing.
Objective:
  • Students will be able to identify different types of text and properly punctuate the titles within a written analysis.
Common Core Standard:
  • Grade 6, Writing Standard 8: Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources; assess the credibility of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and providing basic bibliographic information for sources.
  • Grades 7-8, Writing Standard 8: Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources; assess the credibility of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation
Materials:
  • Cheat Sheet
  • Several different types of texts
    • A novel
    • A poem
    • A article
    • A anthology
    • A newspaper
    • Prezi presentation
Time: 15 minutes
Instructional Procedures:(To be taught before an paper editing workshop, students should already have a rough draft written)
  1. Introduction: Short Class Discussion: Why is it important to properly cite the titles of works? (A universal citation allows the reader to easily understand what type of text the writer is referencing. It is also important to give the author credit for their work) When are these citations necessary? (In academic writing, when references a text)
  2. Instruction: (prezi) – 7 minutes
  • “When to use quotes”
    • Short works and sections of longer works
    • Examples:
  1. Title of a poem (“Where the Sidewalk Ends” by Shel Silverstein)
  2. Title of a short story (“The Gift of the Magi” by O. Henry)
  3. Title of a article in a magazine (“The Balkan Wars: 100 Years Later, a History of Violence” by Ishaan Tharoor)
  4. Title of a article in a newspaper (“Frustrating Hurdle at Customs” by Susan Stellin)
  5. Title of an essay (Seeing with the Heart” by Stephanie Disney)
  • Other titles that require quotes (less common):
    • Title of a song
    • Title of a skit
    • Title of a commercial
    • Title of an TV episode
    • Title of a chapter in a book
    • Title of an encyclopedia Article
    • When to use italics
      • Collection of short works and longer works
      • Examples:
  1. Title of a Novel
  2. Title of a anthology
  3. Title of a play
  4. Title of a film
  5. Title of a Newspaper
  • Other titles that require italics (less common):
    • Title of a long poem (book sized)
    • Title of a CD
    • Title of encyclopedia
    • Title of a magazine
    • Title of a TV series
    • When to underline
      • Underlining used to be considered the same as italicizing (both were accepted)
      • This is no longer the case. It is preferred that the writer only uses italics
  1. Review: -6 minutes
  • Students will be broken up into five groups
  • Each group will be given a different type of text
    • A novel
    • A poem
    • A article
    • A anthology
    • A newspaper
    • Students will then be instructed as a group to figure out what type of text it is and properly punctuate the title
    • Groups will show their results to the rest of the class
  1. Closure:
  • Questions from students
Evaluation: The teacher will see if the students grasped the concept by the results of the review. The teacher will also see the results of this mini lesson at the end of the unit, when the students turn in their papers.
